SIDS Prevention: How to Create a Safe Sleep Environment for Your Baby
Essential Tips to Reduce the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Keeping your baby safe while they sleep is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death of an otherwise healthy baby, usually during sleep. While SIDS is rare, following safe sleep guidelines can significantly reduce the risk.
Safe Sleep Practices to Reduce SIDS Risk
1. Always Place Baby on Their Back
- Whether it's for naps or nighttime, always put your baby to sleep on their back. This position helps keep their airway clear and reduces the risk of SIDS.
2. Use a Firm Sleep Surface
- Your baby should sleep in a crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm, tight-fitting mattress and a snug sheet. Avoid soft surfaces like sofas, pillows, or adult beds.
3. Avoid Soft Bedding and Loose Items
- The sleep area should be free of pillows, blankets, crib bumpers, and stuffed animals, which could increase the risk of suffocation.
4. Maintain a Comfortable Room Temperature
- Keep the room between 68-72°F. Overheating is a known risk factor for SIDS, so dress your baby in light sleep clothing and avoid heavy blankets.
5. Breastfeed If Possible
- Studies show that breastfeeding can reduce the risk of SIDS. Even partial breastfeeding is beneficial.
6. Offer a Pacifier at Sleep Time
- Using a pacifier during naps and bedtime can help reduce the risk of SIDS. If breastfeeding, wait until breastfeeding is well-established before introducing a pacifier.
7. Promote Good Airflow
- Run a ceiling fan or use gentle air circulation in the room to reduce SIDS risk.
8. Ensure Caregivers Know CPR
- We recommend that every caregiver take a
CPR course. You can find local courses through the
American Heart Association at
1-800-242-8721 or
